Meet the Scientist:

Dr. Shazia Hakim on Board

Born and raised in metropolitan City of Pakistan, "Karachi", and then moved to North America; Dr. Hakim has a blend of experience and qualification to work and guide both in advanced and resource limited settings. She is a distinguished professor of Biomedical Sciences at Diné College, Arizona where she teach and research in the areas of Microbiology, Anatomy & Physiology and Bioinformatics.

 

With a post doctorate from South Carolina Center for Biotechnology, Claflin University, Orangeburg, SC., She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Karachi, Pakistan, and received training in renowned labs at the University of Minnesota-Duluth (Raj Karim's Lab.) and the University of Wisconsin-Madison (Rob Stricker's Lab.). Additionally, Dr. Hakim is a Registered Specialist Microbiologist with the Canadian College of Microbiologists in Medical Laboratory Sciences category and a certified Allied Healthcare Instructor from American Medical Technologists (AMT), demonstrating her commitment to professional excellence.

Before joining Diné College, Dr. Hakim held key positions at institutions such as the Canadian Academy of Health Professionals, Toronto, ON, Canada; Oxford College Scarborough, ON, Canada, Jinnah University for Women, Karachi, Pakistan, GoolBano & Anklesaria Hospital, Karachi, Pakistan and Essa Laboratories and Diagnostic Center, Karachi, Pakistan. Her commitment to education, research, and empowering women, girls and minoritized communities in STEM and biomedical fields is unwavering.

  • Advancing Scientific Knowledge: Through rigorous research, publications, and presentations, we have contributed to the advancement of scientific knowledge in the fields of water and wastewater microbiology, infectious diseases, and biomedical sciences. Our research have shed light on water quality, antimicrobial substances, natural medicines, microRNAs, gene sequencing etc., and paving the way for innovative interventions and treatments.

  • Empowering Future Leaders: By providing mentorship, research opportunities, and educational resources, we are empowering students, particularly women and underrepresented minorities, to pursue careers in STEM fields.

  • Promoting Public Health: Through community engagement, outreach initiatives, and advocacy efforts, we have raised awareness about public health issues, promoted health literacy, and advocated for evidence-based policies. By partnering with local and global communities, we are facilitating access to good quality water, awareness of water reuse, community gardening, disease prevention, diagnosis and treatment, and improving health outcomes for vulnerable populations.
